MP+D responds to our volatile political climate with a staged reading of Anthony Burgess's translation of Oedipus followed by discussion, dessert, and wine. Oedipus is our iconic anti-hero, fated from birth for tragedy, who blindly continues on, convinced he has managed to outwit fate. Directed by Jamie Lyons, and designed by John Warren Travis, this site responsive performance at Fort Mason Chapel will use the medium of staged reading, and elements of dance, sound, and costumes to experiment with the process of storytelling and character development. Animated with ideas of power, blindness, truth, and redemption, Sophocles's play speaks to us in new ways today. Director Lyons will energize the reading of Anthony Burgess's accessible and dynamic rendition with all the contradictions and complexities of Oedipus’ downfall and the pain and suffering of those around him. Presented as part of the San Francisco International Arts Festival. Duration: 90mn no intermission.
Jamie Lyons (director) focuses on constructing site specific performances of the fragmentary plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. As co-founding artistic director of Collected Works he co-directed a site specific production of Jean Genet’s The Balcony at The Old Mint in San Francisco. His other experiences in theatre include work at the Mark Taper Forum, Magic Theatre, The Public Theater, La Mama ETC, PS122, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and for six years with the avant-garde theatre company, Mabou Mines.
Before devoting himself full-time to painting, John Warren Travis (designer, co-producer) enjoyed a long career as a theatre designer. John has designed costumes and, in some instances, scenery for more than 150 productions on the West Coast including: Berkeley Repertory Theatre; California Shakespeare Festival; American Conservatory Theater; Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts; Mark Taper Forum; and the San Francisco Ballet. Since his retirement, John Warren Travis has maintained a studio at 1890 Bryant Street and exhibited regularly in California.
