An installation of design plates and models lets you discover the early stages of production and what is happening on the drawing board before performances take full scale, three-dimensional forms. Plates + models include designs for San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Opera, and other local and international productions that are preserved at the Museum of Performance + Design, including works by American designers Russell Hartley, Sandra Woodall, William Pitkin, Leonard Weisgard, as well as Leni Bauer-Ecsy, Antonio Sotomayor, and Wolfram and Jan Skalicki.
Unique to this display, is Oedipus, Thought Sketches a series of thought sketches created by stage designer and painter John Warren Travis for our staged reading of Anthony Burgess translation of Oedipus at the San Francisco International Arts Festival on May 27, 2017. Travis said that with these sketches he tried to "stimulate the actors and flirt with the ironies of Burgess's Clockwork Orange."
Before devoting himself full-time to painting, John Warren Travis enjoyed a long career as a theatre designer. He has designed costumes and, in some instances, scenery for more than 150 productions on the West Coast including: Berkeley Repertory Theatre; California Shakespeare Festival; American Conservatory Theater; Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts; Mark Taper Forum; and San Francisco Ballet.
