Opening January 28, 2025 - The Music of Bert Williams

The Museum of Performance + Design presents The Music of Bert Williams, an in-person and online exhibit that explores the life and works of the legendary entertainer Bert Williams (1874-1922). The boutique exhibit takes visitors on a musical journey through Williams’s career, showcasing MP+D’s collection of his sheet music and photographs, along with a selection of original recordings of some of Williams’ most well-known hits. The exhibit offers a glimpse into the creative mind of a true pioneer of the American entertainment industry who broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of artists. Through his music and comedic performances, Williams’ humor, wit, and social commentary continue to resonate today.

Born in the Bahamas in 1874, Williams overcame significant obstacles to become one of the most successful African American performers of his time. His earliest years as a performer were spent in San Francisco where he would meet his future collaborator and business partner, George Walker. Known for his extraordinary talent as a comedian, singer, and songwriter, Williams was one of the most celebrated stars of the vaudeville era.

This exhibit was curated by Jena Barnes, a Museum of Performance + Design archives intern and MLIS student at San Jose State University.

The Music of Bert Williams runs through Thursday July 3, 2025
